Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
We recommend you bring something familiar from home. A cat bed or an article of clothing worn by a family member is always a good choice. We also suggest you bring your own food. A change in diet can cause digestive tract upset and contribute to any existing anxiety over being in a new environment. Please do not send toys or bedding of sentimental value. We do our very best to keep track of things but your personal items could end up in our laundry and like the "socks", disappear. Toys are also notorious for disappearing. You do not need to bring food dishes. We use dishes that hang onto the side of our condos preventing food and water from spilling. You do not need to bring litter.
I DON'T THINK MY KITTY LIKES OTHER CATS?
It's very common for a cat to react negatively to another animal that has entered what they consider to be their territory. Your cat may consider his/her house and its surroundings to belong to them and feel a natural instinct to protect it. SoHoCats is a neutral environment where these territorial conflicts generally do not exist.
MY CAT HAS NEVER BEEN AROUND OTHER CAT AND I'M A LITTLE NERVOUS?
Most people don't know how their cat will adjust to a space with other cats. We take the worry out of this for you and make it our job. We will know exactly how and when a new guest will join their new friends
WHEN MY CAT IS SETTLED IN, HOW MUCH TIME WILL HE SPEND OUT OF HIS CONDO?
Any guest that is comfortable will have their condo door left open for the day. Many kitties need a little help and encouragement getting started and feeling confident. We will always tend to and provide any needed one on one time to our adjusting friends.
WHAT IF MY CAT IS UNHAPPY AND JUST DOES NOT LIKE BOARDING?
This does happen. It's not very often but when it does, we do anything possible to see your cat does not stay unhappy. Our condos are spacious and lots of one on one time is generously given to any guest needing it. Cats who do prefer to spend their day snuggled up in a condo, are stimulated by the activity around them and the birds singing on our television. Electronic toys or an iPad with a bird show are few things in our bag of tricks!
WILL MY CAT MAKE NEW FRIENDS AT SOHO?
Although cats from different families tend to not play or interact with each other, we do often see this. We mostly find tour guests indifferent to each other and go about their own explorations or personal play throughout the day. Younger cats and kittens do often enjoy running around together and are often known to get the rest of the group running around.
DOES ANYONE STAY OVERNIGHT WITH THE CATS?
No one is at SoHoCats during the night. After a very busy day sleepy kitties are tucked safely into their condo where Ring cameras are installed. We are located in a storefront below an apartment building where the Fire Department is aware of our business. A plan is in place should there be an emergency.
MY CAT TENDS TO GET AGGRESSIVE WHEN HE IS FRIGHTENED AND MIGHT BITE?
It's important to know that aggressive behavior from a cat is often a response to being frightened. Remember you just took your kitty from it's familiar and safe home, put him in a box, then the car, and lastly arrived at an unfamiliar place with people he has not yet become familiar with. Your frightened cat will naturally do anything necessary to protect himself, including attempting to claw or bite a caretaker. Our staff is experienced handling any kitty displaying frightened behavior in a manner that is safe for both the kitty and handler. We don't want you to worry about your kitty's reactions to the changes of the day. It always works itself out, sometimes with a little help from our staff.
CAN I HAVE VISITORS WHILE I AM BOARDING?
Guests are certainly welcome to have visitors during their stay. An aunt, uncle or maybe a neighbor who would like to pop in for a friendly "hello" may call ahead for a good time to stop by for a a face to face.
